Reassigning Datasets

The ability to reassign datasets to another user is controlled by user roles and relationships within NAN. Reassignment is accessed through the dataset context menu in the Data Browser.

Reassignment Rules by Role

  • Facility Managers
May reassign any dataset collected in their facility to any registered NAN user (NOTE: the NAN user must be listed as a facility user from the Manage Facility Users dashboard). There are no time restrictions. This allows facility staff to assist users of their facility to ensure it is assigned to the correct user.
  • Principal Investigators (PIs)
May reassign datasets to any NAN user who has them listed as their PI. This capability is not time-limited and is especially useful when a group member departs and data must be reassigned to a new team member for continued access and curation.
  • Non-PI Users
May reassign a dataset to another member of their lab group within 3 months of the dataset's harvesting date. This supports scenarios where one lab member collected data on behalf of another and later needs to reassign ownership.
  • Users with Multiple PIs
May reassign datasets to their other linked PI(s) within 3 months of harvesting. This is helpful in multi-PI projects or during transitions between labs.
  • PIs with PI Collaborators
PIs may reassign datasets to a designated PI collaborator, enabling data sharing and joint curation within collaborative projects.

Reassignment Modal

When selecting the Reassign action, a modal window will appear prompting the user to choose a reassignment role. Options include:

  • Facility manager reassignment
  • PI reassignment
  • Reassignment within the lab group
  • Update the PI for the dataset
  • Reject due to mis-assignment - this will make the dataset unowned and prompt your facility manager to reassign them to the correct user.

The roles and actions available in the modal are restricted to those for which the current user has appropriate privileges. This ensures that users are only able to perform reassignment operations that align with their role and institutional relationships.
