Managing Projects and Funding Sources (PI View)

Principal Investigators (PIs) have additional privileges within the NAN web application, including the ability to manage Projects and associate them with funding sources. This section describes how PIs and their delegates can perform these tasks.

Accessing Lab Administration

  • The Lab Administration option is available only to users designated as PIs.
  • PIs may assign a PI Delegate. Delegates have access to Lab Administration and can act on behalf of the PI for managing projects and funding sources.

Managing Funding Sources

Funding sources can be associated with Projects to assist with internal recordkeeping and institutional or grant reporting.

Viewing and Editing Funding Sources

  • Funding sources are displayed in a table listing:
    • Agency
    • Funding Institute
    • Grant Number
    • Primary PI
    • Start Date
  • Clicking on a funding source opens a View/Edit Funding modal with full details.

Adding New Funding Sources

  • Select the Add Funding button to create a new funding entry.
  • The following fields are mandatory:
    • Agency
    • Grant Number
    • Abstract / Description
    • Funding Institute
    • Start Date
    • PI First and Last Name
  • Optional fields include:
    • End Date
    • Co-PIs
    • URL
  • A dropdown list allows users to select the Agency. If the agency supports an API, entering the Grant Number will auto-populate the rest of the form. If not, users must manually complete the fields.

Managing Projects

Projects organize datasets and link them to labs, users, and funding sources.

Creating a Project

  • Select the Add Project button to open the Project modal.
  • Required fields:
    • Name (max 24 characters)
    • Description (max 128 characters)
  • Optional fields:
    • Start Date
    • End Date
    • Notes
    • Tags (user-defined)
    • Linked Funding Source (selected from a dropdown of previously added funding)
      • A link is provided to create a new funding source if needed.

Special Project Options

Two checkboxes provide additional project-level control:

  • Do not show in NDTS:
    • Hides the project from appearing in the NDTS GUI on NMR spectrometers. Useful for decluttering the user interface when no new data will be associated with the project.
  • No longer active:
    • Hides the project from the dataset browser and project management interfaces.
    • A checkbox is available in the Projects list to Show Inactive Projects if the user wishes to view or reactivate archived projects.

Linking Projects to Harvested Data

  • Datasets may be associated with a Project at the time of collection via the NDTS GUI on the spectrometer by selecting the desired project.
  • Alternatively, datasets can be linked to a Project post-acquisition through the Dataset Browser interface.

Benefits of Project and Funding Linkage

  • Associating datasets with Projects and funding sources improves organization, facilitates internal reporting, and enables streamlined grant reporting for both labs and NMR facilities.
