Viewing and Editing Existing Requests
Navigate to “UHF Access” in the left-hand panel and select “Lab Requests.” Note that the panel can be hidden/unhidden by clicking the button in the top left corner (see figure). Also note that the panel is only visible when logged into the NAN portal.
On the “UHF Access” page, you’ll see a table listing all requests which you have permission to view. You can customize the table by selecting only the relevant columns for display. Double-clicking a row opens the request for viewing or editing (partially allowed until the review starts).
The top panel provides key dates for current and upcoming application cycles, as UHF requests are reviewed quarterly. Important dates to note include:
- Start of Review Process: Requests submitted by this date are guaranteed to be reviewed. However, if additional information or preliminary data is required by reviewers, your request may be pushed to the next cycle. Requests submitted after the review start date may be reviewed if the reviewer load is low.
- Review Date: The date on which decisions for all requests submitted in the current cycle will be finalized.
Submitting a Request
Submitting a UHF access request is simple. To submit a new request, click the blue “New Request” button in the top right corner. If multiple PIs have granted you permission to submit requests, be sure to select the correct PI.
Fill out the form with all relevant and required fields. You can save a draft and return later to complete the form.
- UHF Access Request Name: Be concise but informative.
- Facility Service: Select your preferred facility. Note that accepted UHF requests are valid across all NAN facilities, but you will need to contact a given facility to ensure instrument availability and scheduling.
- Research Areas: Choose all relevant areas. This information helps in appointing appropriate reviewers for your request.
- Project: If your lab has created a Project on the NAN portal relevant to the request select it from the pull-down menu – it will help prepopulate the required “Project Description” field below.
- Pulse Program Type: This field helps estimate the development time needed to support your research. Standard Bruker pulse programs and those in the NAN KB library are readily available. If selecting “Other,” please provide detailed information in the “Experiment Notes” field (required when Other is selected).
- Project Description: Provide a detailed description or abstract describing the significance of the project and NMR study goals. Note that if a Project was selected the Project’s abstract/description will appear, but is editable for the UHF request.
- UHF Use Justification: This required field should explain why UHF spectrometer time is necessary and why lower field instruments are insufficient.
- Sample Notes: Describe all samples to be used, including concentration/quantity, isotopic labeling, stability, storage and handling requirements, and any chemical and biological safety information. Preliminary data in the form of spectra from a lower field spectrometer is required for each sample type to demonstrate sample quality.
- Constraint Notes: Describe any time constraints for data acquisition, such as deadlines for grant applications, paper resubmissions, or sample preparation constraints, as well as any time constraints that you will not be available. Note that once the UHF request is approved you will work with NMR facility staff if final scheduling.
- Experiment Notes: If utilizing standard Bruker pulse programs or NAN KB pulse sequences provide details such as the types of experiments to be run and experimental conditions. For other pulse programs, include published references, specify nuclei and any other specific parameters or hardware requirements. Note that for solid state NMR experiments specify rotor diameter and magic angle spinning rate.
- Preliminary Data: Upload images of spectra that demonstrate the quality and stability of all sample types, excluding variations in isotopic labeling. Include clear figure captions to explain each spectrum.
Close a request
Once a request is approved, it remains valid for two years, allowing you to contact any NAN facility to schedule data collection in one or multiple sessions. However, if you complete all your experiments sooner, we encourage you to close the UHF submission and update the completion status. If you do not close the request, it will eventually expire, and we will prompt you to provide information on its completion status. If any planned experiments are incomplete, please explain the reasons in the closing remarks. PIs with unreasonably incomplete requests may receive lower priority on future submissions.
You can close a request either from the request page or by selecting the “Close” action in the request table on the “ Lab Requests” page of UHF Access.
Clone a request
Rejected and closed requests can be cloned by selecting the “Clone” action in the request table on the “Lab UHF Access Requests” page. This action transfers all information provided by the submitter to the new request, which can then be edited as needed. Please note that you will need to re-upload preliminary data files.
