Overview
Principal Investigators (PIs) have additional privileges within the NAN web application, including the ability to manage Projects and associate them with Funding Sources. Datasets than may be added to Projects allowing organization and to allow fine-grain access control.
Associating datasets with Projects and Funding Sources improves organization, supports internal tracking, and facilitates reporting for both labs and funding agencies such as NIH and NSF. This is particularly useful when preparing progress reports, renewals, or facility usage summaries.
PIs may assign a PI Delegate to act on their behalf. Delegates have access to Lab Administration and can perform all project and funding management tasks.
The Lab Administration option is only visible to users designated as PIs or their delegates.
Managing Funding Sources
Viewing and Editing Funding Sources
- Funding sources are listed in a table under Lab Administration.
- Clicking on a funding source opens a View/Edit Funding modal with full details.
Funding Source Fields
The table below summarizes the metadata fields for funding sources, indicating whether each field is required, optional, and whether it is displayed in the main table view.
Field | Required | Displayed in Table |
---|---|---|
Agency | Yes | Yes |
Grant Number | Yes | Yes |
Abstract / Description | Yes | No |
Funding Institute | Yes | Yes |
Start Date | Yes | Yes |
PI First Name | Yes | No |
PI Last Name | Yes | No |
Co-PIs | Optional | No |
End Date | Optional | No |
URL | Optional | No |
Adding New Funding Sources
- Select the Add Funding button to create a new funding entry.
- Agency selection is via a dropdown list. If the agency supports an API, users can enter the Grant Number and the system will auto-populate the remaining fields. Otherwise, manual entry is required.
Managing Projects
Creating a Project
- Select the Add Project button to open the Project modal.
- The table below summarizes the available fields for project creation, indicating which are required, optional, and whether they are displayed in the main table view of Projects.
Field | Required | Displayed in Table |
---|---|---|
Name (max 24 characters) | Yes | Yes |
Description (max 128 characters) | Yes | Yes |
Start Date | Optional | Yes |
End Date | Optional | Yes |
Notes | Optional | No |
Tags (user-defined) | Optional | No |
Linked Funding Source | Optional | Yes |
Do not show in NDTS (checkbox) | Optional | No |
No longer active (checkbox) | Optional | No |
- If no suitable funding source exists in the dropdown, a link is provided to create a new funding source directly from the project form.
Special Project Options
Two checkboxes provide additional project-level control:
- Do not show in NDTS:
- Hides the project from appearing in the NDTS GUI on NMR spectrometers. Useful for decluttering the user interface when no new data will be associated with the project.
- No longer active:
- Hides the project from the dataset browser and project management interfaces.
- A checkbox is available in the Projects list to Show Inactive Projects if the user wishes to view or reactivate archived projects.
Linking Projects to Datasets
- Datasets may be associated with a Project at the time of collection via the NDTS GUI on the spectrometer by selecting the desired project.
- Alternatively, datasets can be linked to a Project post-acquisition through the Dataset Browser interface.
